The drawings, geographic reference data and voices behind the atlas and Welcome cloud.

Atlas imagery

The traced figures and catalogue imagery are from Heaven on Earth: As Above, So Below by Bradly Couch. The interactive globe uses Natural Earth public-domain geography and bathymetric contours. The Welcome cloud uses the corpus atlas map.

Voices

Each Welcome word in the language cloud speaks when touched. Twelve languages, among them Navajo, Persian, Kurdish and Basque, are spoken by native speakers whose recordings were shared on Wikimedia Commons and Lingua Libre. Thank you to each of them.

The rest are computer voices: Microsoft Azure AI Speech neural voices, a Google Translate voice for Hausa, and Meta AI’s open Massively Multilingual Speech models for fourteen languages, Guarani and Nahuatl among them. No native voice was available for Māori or Hawaiian, so for now those words are read by Italian voices. We would gladly replace any computer voice with a native speaker’s recording. Lend your voice.

Recordings were trimmed and volume-levelled. Licences are linked where they apply.

If Welcome is in your mother tongue, we would be honoured to hear you say it. Every recording must be a real human voice: yours, unaltered. We do not accept AI, text-to-speech or cloned voices.

We listen to each recording before it is used. When yours replaces a computer voice, you are credited here by name, under the licence you choose. Languages not yet in the cloud, Cherokee, Quechua and Ojibwe among them, are just as welcome.
